For a few years Alberta Wellnet has been developing a system that stores all the prescriptions for all patients in Alberta, all of their allergies and all drug dispensing events. One of the major goals was to create a system to check for drug-to-drug contraindications and drug-to-allergy contraindications for physicians prescribing medication. This is not only against the drugs that you know the patient is on, but all drugs that have been prescribed or dispensed in Alberta, since patients do not get prescriptions from just one doctor or pharmacy.
There has been a web interface with the provincial system for over a year. However, both physicians and Alberta Wellnet recognize that the web interface takes additional time to use because it requires double data entry. In order to sync the information, the physician must first enter the data into his or her local EMR (Electronic Medical Record), and then re-type the exact information into the patient's provincial health record. Additionally, since it is a web interface, Internet access must available at all times.
Jonoke has built an EHR system-to-system interface with MediFile©. This means that you do not have to do anything extra to have the prescription you write in MediFile© automatically check against the provincial system. The headaches of having to enter and retrieve data in two entirely different systems have been eliminated, yet you still have all the benefits of a province-wide patient medical record.
On July 15th, at 9:58 AM, the first real message from a system-to-system interface was entered into the provinical EHR. This message was sent by one of Jonoke's MediFile© clients. This interface is here — it is real, live and it is working! This is a major achievement for both Jonoke and Alberta Wellnet.
