iMac Setup

Description

How to setup an out-of-the-box iMac for MediFile.

Detail

- Throw out everything on the desktop except the Trash can and Macintosh HD.

Go to the Edit menu and select Preferences…

Select Tight for grid spacing.

Click on the Views tab and select "Always Snap To Grid" for icon arrangement.

Close the Preferences window and double-click on Macintosh HD. Arrange the folders in this order, throwing out what is not present in the figure below and creating the folders not present on the hard drive.

Double-click on the Internet folder and delete everything but what is shown below and the Netscape alias. Move the Netscape alias on to the desktop for further use.

Double-click on Internet Applications while holding the option key and delete everything but the Netscape Communicator™ Folder. Close the Internet Applications window.

Double-click on the Applications folder while holding the option key and arrange the window as shown below. Delete the QuickTime™ folder, because it contains an old version of QuickTime™. Create aliases of Adobe Acrobat 3.0 and AppleWorks 5 and move them onto the desktop.

Go to the Apple Menu, highlight Control Pannels, select Apple Menu Options and de-select Remember Recently Used Items:

Go to the Apple Menu, highlight Control Pannels, select General Controls and select Off for Menu Blinking.

Open the Apple Menu Items folder and throw out the Favorites, Internet, folder and Quicken.com items.

Create a new folder called “ MediFile.” This name does include the space at the front of the name so that this folder appears at the top of the Apple Menu. Put the Netscape alias on the desktop into the “ MediFile” folder.

Create a folder called “Applets” and drag the Apple System Profiler, Calculator, FaxStatus, Graphing Calculator, Key caps, Network Browser, Note Pad, Sherlock and SimpleSound into it.

Create a folder called “Applications” and put the Adobe Acrobat 3.0 and AppleWorks 5 aliases in it.

Arrange the folder as in the figure below, then close the window.

- Go to the Apple Menu and highlight File Sharing. Put in the owner name, password and computer name. Do not start sharing.

Go to the Apple Menu and highlight TCP/IP. Click and hold on Using DHCP Server and select Manually. Type in the IP Address and Subnet Mask. Every other box should be empty. Go to the menu Edit and select “User Mode . . . ” and click on Administration, then click OK. Click on all of the lock buttons except the one beside IP Address, then close the window. This will allow you to easily change the IP Address without having to worry about the rest.

Go to the Apple Menu and highlight Chooser.

Click on AppleShare and select your Image Server, then click OK.

Type in the workstation’s user name and password, then click OK.

Select the Image Server volumes and check them off. Click on Save my Name and password. Click on OK then close the window.

Double-click on volume that has the User_Folder in it, on your desktop while holding the option key.

Double-click on the User_Folder while holding the option key.

Double-click on the Work Stations folder while holding the option key.

Copy all the items that appear in the Work Stations window, exept the folder CPUs (this folder contains all the iMac icons), then close the window.

Put the Desktop Pics folder into the Apple Extras folder within the Macintosh HD.

Create an alias of 4D Client and put 4D Client into the Jonoke folder within the Macintosh HD. Rename “4D Client alias” to MediFile. Single-click on MediFile and press command "D." Move MediFile into the “ MediFile” folder within the Apple Menu. Rename “MediFile copy” to MediFile.

Double-click on Darkside.sea. This starts up the unstuffer. Unstuff Darkside into the Applications folder within the Macintosh HD. Throw out Darkside.sea(which looks like a diamond). Double-click on Macintosh HD while holding the option key, double-click on Applications while holding the option key, double-click on “DarkSide of the Mac 4.2” while holding the option key, double-click on DarkSide while holding the option key. Follow the instructions given, then go to the File Menu and select “Dark Side Settings . . . ” Type in "5 minutes of idle time" before the screen-saver goes on and x9 for the password. Choose the screen-saver type and close the window.

Double-click on the QuickTime Installer and follow the instructions given. When the time comes, select the Full Install and the Lan Network. After you restart, double-click on Macintosh HD and move the QuickTime™ Folder into the Applications folder, then close the window. Go to the Apple Menu and select Applications. Drag the QuickTime Player alias into this folder, then close the window and throw out the QuickTime installer.

Double-click on the printer installer, press return, press return, press tab, press u, press return, press return, press return. When it is done installing, click on restart. Close the window. Delete the printer installer.

Go to the Apple Menu and highlight Chooser. Click on Laser Writer 8 and then on the printer you wish to print from. Click on Create and click on OK when it is done.
