Terminal Server

The cross-platform nature of JonokeMed™, and the 4th Dimension programming language with which it is written, creates the opportunity to access the 'best of both worlds' – using Macintosh and PC computers together, with each implemented where its specific strengths are beneficial.

Jonoke currently recommends using a Windows Server computer to run JonokeMed™, with Macintosh workstations and Butler server. This setup has been demonstrated to be very reliable and stable.

Windows Server can be set up to provide Terminal Services, delivering a Windows desktop to the screen of any client computer on the network, whether that be a Windows or Mac computer, or a thin client (see below). This means that your JonokeMed™ workstations can be any of a variety of physical hardware, which each provide an interface to the JonokeMed™ system via client software. That interface is a 'virtual desktop' actually running on the server, a sort of temporary clone of a Windows operating system.

The benefits of Terminal Services have mostly to do with administrative control. The server itself is where settings and applications are maintained/run, allowing easier management and restriction of any user's computer work environment.

Thin Client

The 'traditional' JonokeMed™ Client setup uses full personal computers for workstations. A thin client is a minimal hardware alternative, designed for use on Terminal Services networks. This device, typically less expensive than a complete personal computer, simply serves to connect the user with JonokeMed™; it is the minimum hardware necessary to provide keyboard and mouse control and a connected monitor.
