The cross-platform nature of JonokeMed™, and the 4th Dimension
programming language with which it is written, creates the
opportunity
to access the 'best of both worlds' using Macintosh
and PC computers together, with each implemented where its
specific strengths are beneficial.
Jonoke currently recommends using a Windows Server computer
to run JonokeMed™, with Macintosh workstations and Butler server.
This setup has been demonstrated to be very reliable and
stable.
Windows Server can be set up to provide Terminal Services,
delivering a Windows desktop to the screen of any client
computer on the network, whether that be a Windows or Mac
computer, or a thin client (see below). This means that your
JonokeMed™ workstations can be any of a variety of physical
hardware, which each provide an interface to the JonokeMed™
system via
client software. That interface is a 'virtual desktop' actually
running on the server, a sort of temporary clone of a Windows
operating system.
The benefits of Terminal Services have mostly to do with administrative control. The server itself is where settings and applications are maintained/run, allowing easier management and restriction of any user's computer work environment.
Thin Client
The 'traditional' JonokeMed™ Client setup uses full personal
computers for workstations. A thin client is a minimal hardware
alternative, designed for use on Terminal Services networks.
This device, typically less expensive than a complete personal
computer, simply serves to connect the user with JonokeMed™;
it is the minimum hardware necessary to provide keyboard
and
mouse
control and a connected monitor.
